Push starting your car

FOXY does not recommend push starts for many reasons.

  1. Unburnt fuel in the exhaust is a bad thing if you have a catalytic converter. When the car fires, this unburnt fuel will explode and, whilst this might sound like a pop in the exhaust system, it can damage the catalyser – and they are very expensive to replace.
  2. A damaged catalyser can cause your car breathing difficulties (loss of power) and it will fail the MOT test as a result.
  3. Even an older car without a catalyser will probably have power brakes and power steering which won't work until your engine is running.
  4. It is not possible to push start a car with automatic transmission.

Instead, if you have access to another car with a healthy battery, consider jump starting your car.
