What to do when your car's red emergency battery light comes on

Your car's emergency battery light will turn red to tell you that the charging circuit isn't working as it should.

It may be due to a faulty alternator (the generator that produces the electric current) or drive belt, or another component in the circuit. Either way, it's not generally a roadside repair option for the average driver.

All is not lost however!

If it's daylight, the battery will probably last long enough to complete your journey. To help things along, turn off all unnecessary electrical loads such as a heated screen, radio, air conditioning or fan. The more power you save the further you'll go.

If the problem occurs at night, you'll need to use headlights but even then, you should get to do five or possibly ten miles depending on conditions.

Don't attempt to use the car again without getting the problem fixed.
