Women in Film night at the Trash Cannes Festival
For those of you in want of a higher brow option, open yourself up to some lively and informative debate and film screenings at this weekend’s Trash Cannes Film Festival in London.
The Festival kicks off tomorrow evening (Friday 13 February) at the Cinema Museum in Kennington, London. It’s housed in Charlie Chaplin’s old house and rare Chaplin shorts will be screened by the legendary East London Super 8 shopkeeper, Umit Mesut.
This will then move into the Women in Film night with a panel discussion featuring Director Gurinder Chadha (Bhaji on the Beach), Faye Ward (Producer of next year’s Oscar favourite, Suffragette starring Meryl Streep), Nichola Martin (Development Executive of BBC Films), Casting Director Kahleen Crawford (Under the Skin) and Holly Tarquini (creator of the Feminist Rating), and hosted by presenter Rebecca Perfect (Sky News, Channel 5). It will be followed by BAFTA-nominated Tina Ghavari’s widely-acclaimed I Am Nasrine.
In light of the recent issues of diversification in the film industry, the night will address what true gender representation looks like in film, exploring everything from the ‘Bechdel Test’ to the new Feminist Rating. With industry insiders and special guests, Trash Cannes will be the perfect two fingers to Valentine’s Day weekend.
With an overwhelming bias towards roles for men, festival organisers agree that it’s time to get to the bottom of this. Discussions will include issues about the Male Gaze, feminist ratings and the Bechdel test, and will explore viable solutions to this problem.
Dr. Garth Twa, founder of Trash Cannes, said: “The Trash Cannes Festival is an opportunity dive in face first, mouth open, to the hidden, forgotten, and overlooked cultural eddies in London. Unexpected, sometimes subversive, always informative, we explore film, punk, art, and debate in venues as surprising as the content. Trash Cannes is about the uncompromising, the enlightening, and the just plain fun.”
We reckon that Trash Cannes: London promises to be one of the most unique film festivals of the year and a great antidote to Valentine’s weekend blues!

Order a butler (in the buff) to run you a bath this Valentine’s Day
For those of you wanting to turn that male gaze on its head, and perhaps fancy something a little “lower brow”, then perhaps the opportunity to order a Butler in the Buff could be the option for you.
Brought to you by Bathrooms.com and the rather classy “male order company” (you see what they’re doing there) Butlersinthebuff.co.uk. This Valentine’s Day they’re offering you the chance to treat yourself to a personal naked butler in the buff, to run you a bath. Naked, though we think he may be sporting an small apron to protect his modesty.
What, “but I’ve just spent the last 12 months actively campaigning for No More Page 3 to put an end to the objectification of the body within our society” we hear you say. To which we reply, “mmmeh…”.
The service is for 2 hours and prices start at £114. More info at www.bathrooms.com/bathroom-butler/
